The Linux operating system has overtaken Apple’s macOS in popularity among gamers on the Steam game distribution platform. This is evidenced by the results of the July Steam survey, writes Ars Technica.

The company regularly asks users to anonymously evaluate their hardware and publishes the information collected on a monthly basis. According to the report, Linux took second place in July, although macOS had been holding this position for a long time.

Currently, Linux is used by 1.96% of Steam gamers, and macOS by 1.84%. Instead, the leadership is traditionally in the Windows OS – it is installed on the computers of 96.21% of players.

In June, the Steam development team announced the release of a new version of the Steam client, which contains all the new features that have successfully passed beta testing. The most important changes include unifying and sharing code for the Steam desktop client, Big Picture mode, and Steam Deck. This means faster implementation and iteration of new features in the future.

The update also includes improvements to Steam’s visuals and usability, including dialogs, menus, fonts, and colors.
