The Committee of the Verkhovna Rada on humanitarian and information policy unanimously adopted a decision to support the presidential draft law No. 9432 on the English language, with the removal of all regulations about cinema and television from it. People’s deputy Volodymyr Viatrovych reported this on Facebook.
According to his information, all regulations that would narrow the scope of the Ukrainian language on television and in movie distribution are removed from the document. Those are the requirement to show English-language movies in cinemas in the original language, changes to the law on cinematography, changes to the law on the state language in the field of cinema, and changes to the law on media on reducing the quota of Ukrainian-language programs.
“I thank my colleagues for the wise statesmanship decision that will allow consideration of the draft law without hazardous anti-Ukrainian regulations,” he wrote.
We will remind that on June 28, the Verkhovna Rada registered draft law No. 9432 “On the use of the English language in Ukraine”. The document is defined by the President as urgent.
According to the explanatory note to the draft law, it was developed with the aim of regulating at the legislative level the issue of the functioning of the English language as the language of international communication in Ukraine.
Among other things, the document provided for an increase in the share of films in the original language. It was proposed to replace dubbing with Ukrainian subtitles. Such an initiative caused outrage among Ukrainians.
