Adaptation of the Nintendo video game The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and became the second highest-grossing animated film of all time. This is reported by Variety.

The first place in this list is still held by the sequel Frozen Heart 2 with earnings of $1.45 billion. But the first part about the adventures of Anna and Elsa, which was still in second place, is now in third place. Disney’s Frozen Heart grossed $1.28 billion.

The animated Super Mario Bros. Movie was created by Universal and Illumination. It was well received by viewers around the world and grossed $566 million in the American market and $733.9 million in the international market.

So far, this is the only film this year that was able to cross the milestone of $1 billion. Outside of North America, the biggest amounts were grossed in Mexico ($84 million), Japan ($80 million), Great Britain ($64 million), and France ($57 million).

It was previously reported that the animated movie made its theatrical debut over the Easter weekend, surpassing all expectations and breaking several records. The film grossed a record $377 million at the global box office, marking the best opening of all time for a cartoon. Of that, the five-day US earning was $204.6 million, including $146.4 million over the three-day weekend, while the overseas income was $173 million in 70 markets.
