Imgur, a photo uploading, storage and sharing service, is set to ban all nudity or sexually explicit images. Imgur is best known as a website hosting Reddit users’ images – memes, GIFs and, of course, countless pornography, writes Vice.

According to Imgur’s updated Terms of Service, the ban on adult content will take effect on May 15, 2023. At the same time, Imgur will not only prohibit users from uploading new content of a sexual nature but will also focus on removing all such content that has accumulated over the years of the service, which began operating back in 2009.

“You will need to download/save any images that you wish to save if they no longer adhere to these Terms. Most notably, this would include explicit/pornographic content,” Imgur said in its post.

The company added that it will remove adult content using automated tools as well as moderators.

Starting May 15th, Imgur will no longer allow:

  • the gratuitous or explicit display of breasts, butts, and sexual organs intended to stimulate erotic feelings;
  • full or partial nudity;
  • any depiction of sexual activity, explicit or implied (drawings, print, animated, human, or otherwise);
  • any image taken of or from someone without their knowledge or consent for the purpose of sexualization;
  • solicitation (the uninvited act of directly requesting sexual content from another person, or selling/offering explicit content and/or adult services).

As is usually the case, a large number of works of art, from paintings to artistic and historical photography, will fall under the prohibition of “full or partial nudity”, especially with automatic moderation.
