The formation of new, unique units was announced through social networks by Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation. According to the minister, these are the world’s first UAV strike companies.

“Today, the first three UAV strike companies are ready for battle. Together with partners, they were fully staffed. Pick-ups, attack copters, and Starlinks were handed over. All drones are Ukrainian-made. The equipment for the strike companies of the Drone Army was purchased by private donors.

Drones will perform reconnaissance and strike missions. They will aim for artillery, help soldiers to be as effective as possible during urban battles, and save lives. Pick-ups will be needed for raids of mobile groups behind enemy lines, delivery of goods, and evacuation of the wounded. Starlinks are uninterrupted communication on the battlefield. All this is our competitive advantage over the Russians,” wrote Mykhailo Fedorov.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Special Communications Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense, and the UNITED24 foundation participated in the project to create a company of attack UAVs. Currently, it is not known which Ukrainian drones are used by the new strike units. For security reasons, parts of the photo where the UAV could be seen have been edited.

The first three UAV strike companies were formed in the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The creation of UAV strike companies was announced and approved at the Headquarters by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Valerii Zaluzhnyi on January 27, 2023. The Boryviter military school became the main partner for the training of strike companies.

The current Russian-Ukrainian war is the first war with the massive use of drones of all types, purposes, and sizes. The experience of the Ukrainian military in the use of UAVs is unique and will be studied by the world’s leading military institutions for many years after the victory.
