More than two years have passed since the announcement of the appearance of HiFi audio on the music streaming service Spotify, but it never happened. However, the company does not abandon its plans, Spotify co-president Gustav Söderström told The Verge. However, Spotify is not yet ready to share specific information on this matter.

“We announced it, but then the industry changed for a bunch of reasons,” Soderstrom said in Decoder’s latest episode. “We are going to do it, but we’re going to do it in a way where it makes sense for us and for our listeners. The industry changed and we had to adapt.”

Spotify initially said it planned to launch HiFi as a premium tier by the end of 2021. Since then, Apple Music has added lossless music, and high-quality music on other services has become more accessible.

When asked about how the industry has changed, or whether the delay is related to costs, Söderström said it is not. “We want to do it in a way where it works for us from a cost perspective as well. I’m not allowed to comment on our label agreements, nor on what other players in the industry did, for obvious reasons.”

As for when we’ll be able to listen to higher-quality audio on Spotify, all Söderström has confirmed is that HiFi on the platform is “coming soon.”
