Nokia, which in 2016 transferred its eponymous smartphone brand to another Finnish company HMD Global, decided to further distance itself from this business. At MWC 2023, Nokia announced an updated logo, which still consists of letters, but is now significantly different from the classic logo. With this step, the company management wants to show that Nokia is engaged in mobile networks and industrial digitalization.
“In most people’s minds, we are still a successful mobile phone brand, but this is not what Nokia is about,” said Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark in a comment to Bloomberg agency. “We want to launch a new brand that is focusing very much on the networks and industrial digitalization, which is a completely different thing from the legacy mobile phones.”
The revamp of Nokia’s logo and branding was the company’s first major redesign in nearly 60 years. The manufacturer has come a long way since its founding in 1865 as a paper manufacturer. The first Nokia logo appeared in 1871 and featured a salmon head, a reference to the Nokianvirta River, near which the pulp mill was built and which gave the company its name.
The Nokia logo, which became well-known to mobile phone users and at one time was the most expensive brand among phone manufacturers, appeared in 1966 and has hardly changed since then. For now, it will remain unchanged on Nokia smartphones produced by HMD Global.
