Disney is keeping details of Rob Marshall’s upcoming remake of The Little Mermaid under wraps until it debuts on May 26. Aside from one trailer and a few promo images, we still haven’t been able to see Halle Bailey’s Ariel. But the new teaser does show the mermaid princess played by the American singer, who along with her sister created the duo Chloe x Halle, which has received five Grammy nominations since 2018.

The trailer also gives the impression that The Little Mermaid, using CGI animation, aims to get closer to reality, to a naturalistic aesthetic, which does not always have a good effect on the story. It’s hard to tell from a few seconds of visuals how well the film’s aesthetic language is executed, and whether the new Little Mermaid can be anything other than Disney’s 1989 classic.

The new film seems very close to its predecessor. The Little Mermaid teaser features the ocean and Ariel on a shipwreck – just like in the animated film – and a snippet of the iconic song ‘Part of Your World’. The Little Mermaid with Halle Bailey is scheduled to be released in May this year.
