On December 3, the Chinese streaming platform Bilibili will release an anime version of the eponymous fantasy novel “The Three-Body Problem” by Liu Cixin. A new trailer for the upcoming anime, developed by CG studio YHTK Entertainment in partnership with The Three-Body Universe studio, created specifically for the franchise, was released during the anime screening on Bilibili.

Published in 2008 as a stand-alone book after having been published in Science Fiction World magazine in 2006, The Three-Body Problem is the first book in Liu Cixin’s “Memory of Earth’s Past” series of science fiction works.

In the original novel, humanity manages to establish contact with an alien race and prepares for their arrival. Naturally, there is a line between welcoming a new species to Earth with open arms and preparing to defend the planet from an alien invasion.

According to the press release, animation studios from around the world are allowed to explore the “Memory” franchise to showcase its global potential through different art and animation styles. In a press release, Liu Cixin said:

“Animation, like science fiction, is an art of imagination. Imagination is the most powerful force of mankind. I believe that in the world of animation, a science fiction story like The Three-Body Problem can really come to life.”
