Director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran will lead the newly created Warner Bros. Discovery is a division of DC Studios, which is supposed to be the answer to Marvel Studios, informs The Verge.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, plan of Warner Bros. Discovery’s on DC Studios is that Gunn will lead the division’s creative vision, while Safran will be tasked with overseeing money and production.

Both Gunn and Safran will report to CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav and will reportedly continue to direct and produce in addition to their executive duties as part of the four-year deal. In Gunn’s case, he will be working exclusively with DC, which is an interesting development given his connection to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

Gunn took on even greater responsibility at Warner Bros. Discovery after Marvel initially fired him from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in 2018 due to the director’s old offensive tweets. Although Marvel eventually brought Gunn back to the project, it was only after Warner Bros. has already offered him the lead on Suicide Squad, the success of which led to the Peacemaker spin-off and, apparently, this new deal.

In a joint statement, Gunn and Safran said they were particularly interested in creating an “integrated, layered universe,” a project that “still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved.”

“We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children,” said the duo. “Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”
