Monkeypox is spreading – a public health emergency was declared in the US on Thursday due to its outbreak. The number of patients in the country exceeded 6,600, reports CNBC.

Declaring an emergency will make it easier to access funds and allow doctors to gather more information about the spread of the disease. It will also speed up the distribution of vaccines and make it easier for doctors to prescribe therapy.

A quarter of all cases are in New York, where a state of emergency was declared last week. On Monday, it was also introduced in California and Illinois.

“We’re prepared to take our response to the next level in addressing this virus, and we urge every American to take monkeypox seriously and to take responsibility to help us tackle this virus,” the health secretary said.

The United States hopes to contain the spread of the virus by taking all possible measures.

Monkeypox is mainly spread through sexual contact between men. The WHO recently recommended that such men reduce the number of partners and refrain from new ones while the outbreak continues. The average age of the patient is 35 years, but people of any age can become infected.
