Since the beginning of the war, Ukrainian activists, bloggers, and volunteers have often been blocked on Instagram and Facebook. Ministry of Digital Transformation helped restore their posts and pages by sending requests to Meta. For the most part, such requests received a positive response. However, this time the ministry decided to approach the problem more globally and sent an appeal to the company’s management.

“Today we wrote a letter to Nick Clegg, President of Global Policy of Meta Corporation, to improve the moderation processes of Ukrainian content. They also asked to share with Ukrainian users their list of moderation rules for the Ukrainian region”, reports the Ministry of Digital Transformation.

The answer should help to understand what content the moderation system perceives as dangerous, and to avoid mass blocking of pro-Ukrainian users.

The Ministry of Digital Transformation appeals to Meta regarding the blocking of Ukrainian bloggers in social networks

The Ministry of Digital Transformation reminds that blockings mostly occur for two reasons. Some content is automatically blocked by Instagram and Facebook algorithms. The company’s policy is not adapted to the conditions of the ongoing war in Ukraine. In addition, moderation of Ukrainian content is not always of high quality.

Part of the blocking is also facilitated by Russian bots, which massively complain about the posts and pages of Ukrainian activists.
