Deadpool continues to be one of the most unusual Marvel superheroes due to the fact that everything that happens around him is just a comic book. This allows the character to constantly comment on everything around him in a funny way, as well as to get into non-standard situations. The first part of Deadpool with Ryan Reynolds managed to bring this advantage of the talkative mercenary to the big screens, and in a bloody and sweary R-rated movie. Almost everyone loved it for that.
Deadpool & Wolverine was supposed to raise the stakes to a whole new level. Here you have Deadpool’s first appearance in the official Marvel Cinematic Universe, the first MCU movie with an R-rating, and Hugh Jackman’s return to the role of Wolverine. But it turned out that this movie is so crazy and confusing that it’s almost impossible to watch normally.

The story of the movie begins with Wade Wilson’s (Ryan Reynolds) attempt to join the Avengers, which he wants very much. But Deadpool’s insanity and his excessive, provocative talkativeness prevent his dream from coming true. So he puts his superhero career in the closet for many years. He would have continued to sell all sorts of junk to people, but representatives of the Time Shift Authority (TSA) found him. They offer Deadpool to enter the world of the MCU Avengers and become part of their team, but for this to happen, Wilson’s world must be destroyed. The only hope for salvation is Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), whose very presence in Deadpool’s universe should stabilize the situation.
Why did people like the previous Deadpool movies in the first place? In short, for the central character with his comments on pop culture and the state of affairs in the modern world, as well as for the vivid violence and “adult” jokes. “Adult” is in quotation marks for a reason, because making three more jokes about sex or sexually transmitted diseases on stage is not very “adult” behavior. Deadpool & Wolverine was supposed to add an unusual tandem of protagonists to the familiar formula and an opportunity to joke more actively about the Marvel movie universe.
But, who would have thought, on an emotional level, you may not even notice that you are watching a movie about the adventures of Deadpool and Wolverine. After all, the emphasis is constantly shifting towards cameos, references, unusual comments and other metanarrative “quibbles.” The cameos in the movie are really good and even stunning. But their number and direction create problems for the holistic perception of the story.
To understand all the jokes in Deadpool & Wolverine, you need to have a deep understanding of popular culture, comic books, and their actors over the past… 20 years. The movie actively speaks out about the policies of Fox and Marvel and Disney, even mentioning characters who were only planned to be made into movies, but nothing ever came to fruition. So you have to keep up to date with news and online discussions about movie mixes in order to laugh out loud while watching the movie and understand all the enthusiastic shouts of the fans, who will definitely be in the audience.
Deadpool & Wolverine is a movie exclusively for comic book fans who can spend hours arguing about the best version of Spider-Man or the directorial features of different parts of the X-Men. In other words, this story doesn’t work as a solution to the current difficult situation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is not able to attract people who are not familiar with the nuances of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On the contrary, the film seems to repel outsiders and resembles a party “for our own” where many people will feel unwanted.
After all, what can a person get out of watching a movie for whom names like Electra and Gambit mean nothing? Frankly speaking, only rather vulgar entertainment such as a joke about Cheeky, exclusive to Ukrainian dubbing, and the constant presence of blood with severed limbs in the frame. Someone will definitely like it, it’s not for nothing that fans have been begging Marvel to do something with an R-rating for a long time. But sometimes when you watch it, it seems that the authors are showing you a set of scenes, not a whole movie.
Deadpool & Wolverine has very big problems with the pace and methods of storytelling. It is clear that due to the talkative nature of the protagonist, it will not be possible to make the most serious drama, but for some reason the film crew is still trying to do it. At such moments, one thinks that two works have been combined in one film. And the dramatic moments definitely don’t enhance the final result, but only distract from the show.
After all, Deadpool’s new adventures are a satire and irony of the current state of affairs in the comic book industry, where there is even room for criticism of the multiverse concept and jabs at DC. It’s more of a commentary on entertainment than an independent work of art. Therefore, without the proper background, there is almost nothing to do at the session.
However, if you try to put all the jokes and references together with the intention of understanding their meaning, the main problem with Deadpool & Wolverine is the lack of sincerity. Expecting sincerity from a story about Deadpool, for whom nothing in the world is sacred, may seem a bit strange, but the problem is not with the main character, but with the positioning of the movie as a product of the industry and its tone. Because Deadpool never criticizes Marvel and Disney too much.
Instead of creative criticism, the writers of Deadpool & Wolverine chose to make jokes about drugs and Kevin Feige, and they try to leave every truly provocative moment only at the level of hints in order to shift responsibility to the viewer. And even the Marvel Cinematic Universe itself is used in a very conditional way. It still refers mainly to Fox’s work, and the Loki PSC could easily be replaced by any other organization.
So Deadpool’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe turned out to be somewhat the same as the character. That is, crazy, unstructured, and absurd. It also has a kind of charm, but don’t expect too much from the movie. If you’re not a fan, your heart is unlikely to start beating faster.
So, will Deadpool and Wolverine be able to save the Marvel Cinematic Universe? More likely no, or yes, but this movie will find its audience and money. And the MCU, well, someone else will save the MCU.
