The Ministry of Defense codified three modifications of Ukrainian pump-action shotguns effective against drones
The Ministry of Defence has codified and approved for operation in the Defense Forces three modifications of Ukrainian-made smoothbore pump-action shotguns. This was reported by the Main Directorate for Lifecycle Support of Armaments and Military Equipment.
12-gauge pump-action shotguns are designed for a variety of tactical tasks. They use cartridges with a 76-millimeter case length that can be loaded with bullets or shot.
"These weapon systems stand out for their effectiveness, especially in close-quarters combat, as well as their ease of use and reliability. They are well-suited as secondary weapons for infantry operating in dense urban environments or narrow trench systems," the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
It was added that in the Russian-Ukrainian war, pump-action shotguns have also demonstrated effectiveness as a means of countering enemy kamikaze drones. Equipped with shotshell cartridges, the shotgun is used to destroy UAVs at close range – especially during their approach to the target.
"The Ukrainian pump-action shotguns are compact and equipped with Picatinny rails for mounting auxiliary equipment, including foregrips, reflector sights, flashlights, laser sights, and other accessories. The compactness of these weapons is ensured by folding or telescopic stocks, which are adjustable to the shooter’s anatomical parameters," the report says.
The Ministry of Defense also reported that Ukraine has begun mass-producing small arms of Western models under license. This includes, in particular, the Czech CZ Bren 2 assault rifle, which, thanks to its ergonomics, lower weight, and modular design, surpasses the Kalashnikov assault rifle.
It was previously reported that since the beginning of 2025, more than 60 samples of domestic ammunition have been allowed into operation in Ukraine.
