China is developing new technologies for tanks and armored vehicles that use augmented reality (AR) headsets. This increases crew awareness and combat capabilities of the equipment, writes Defence Blog.

Systems connected to external cameras and sensors mounted on tanks and infantry fighting vehicles provide crews with a real-time, 360-degree view of the battlefield. AR headsets have a transparent display that displays important data from cameras and onboard systems. This literally allows commanders and drivers to "see through the armor" of their vehicle.

The new technology was demonstrated on the ZTZ-201 medium tank and China's latest generation of combat support vehicles. Integrated with multiple external cameras and situational awareness sensors, the system allows the crew to get a clear picture of what is happening day and night in both open terrain and urban environments. The corresponding videos appeared on the Chinese social network Weibo.

In addition to improving visibility, the augmented reality system also allows for direct control of the vehicle's weapons. The concept echoes technology used in the US Army's AH-64 Apache helicopters, where the 30mm cannon can track the pilot's head movements. Similarly, in the Chinese system, the gunner can identify targets simply by turning his head or focusing his gaze, and the turret and weapons move automatically.

The AR headset also displays information about the vehicle’s status, ammunition levels, and target information. This also allows crew members to quickly switch between roles driver, gunner, or commander which increases flexibility on the battlefield. This is important in the event of injury or death of one of the crew members.

It is not yet clear whether this system has been deployed or remains a prototype for demonstration purposes, but its implementation reflects China's growing emphasis on integrating advanced digital technologies into armored formations.

According to the publication, such a system can be adapted to various combat vehicles, which will increase its combat capabilities.

It was previously reported that China plans to show weapons at the parade that can hit the US. These include combat drones, anti-ship, cruise and hypersonic missiles.
