German company Gabler has unveiled two concepts for surface drones to be launched from submarine torpedo tubes, Naval News reports. The new models are called Ranger and Raider and are being developed in collaboration with technology partner FLANQ.
Both vehicles have the same hull design, 4.5 meters long, designed to dive to depths of up to 300 meters, equipped with a folding mast, electric drive, and multiple payload compartments.
Ranger is designed for multiple use in reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence gathering operations. It is equipped with a sensor system that provides real-time data transmission, allowing submarines to launch and return the vehicle without loss of stealth.
The Raider, on the other hand, is designed for single-shot tactical missions. Its forward compartment allows for the placement of a user-defined payload. This allows it to neutralize high-value targets without direct risk to the submarine crew.
Gabler and FLANQ have announced an accelerated work schedule to quickly achieve the technology’s readiness for practical use by European and NATO navies. The companies are also working with European defense suppliers to ensure the drones are compatible with existing Navy systems.
It was previously reported that Germany plans to strengthen its naval fleet with unmanned missile carriers by 2035.
