Elon Musk's startup xAI has launched a new AI model for agent-based coding, grok-code-fast-1, which allows AI to autonomously perform programming tasks. The model is positioned as "fast and economical" and aims to simplify everyday coding.

Grok-code-fast-1 is available for free for a limited time to select partners, including GitHub Copilot and Windsurf. According to xAI, the model offers high performance in a compact form factor and low running costs, making it a versatile tool.

The model can automatically write code, fix errors, and suggest optimizations, making it useful for developers of all experience levels. xAI notes that grok-code-fast-1 works well with popular programming languages and integrates with various development environments.

xAI competitors, including OpenAI and Microsoft, are also developing similar tools. In May, Microsoft introduced GitHub Copilot as a programming agent, and CEO Satya Nadella said that 20–30% of Microsoft’s code is created by AI. OpenAI made Codex available to ChatGPT Plus users in June.

Earlier this week, Elon Musk's company xAI filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI in federal court in Texas, accusing them of conspiring to restrict competition in the AI market. xAI claims that competitors tried to limit access to its platforms and partnerships to prevent the release of new products.
