In the latest Windows 11 beta builds, Microsoft has added support for video wallpapers. Users will be able to set files in .mp4, .mkv, and other formats as desktop images.

This was reported by insider @phantomofearth, who found a relevant innovation in the Windows 11 developer beta (26x20.6690). Users will be able to upload their own video, which will play every time they open the desktop.

The feature works similarly to third-party programs such as Wallpaper Engine, as well as Microsoft's own solution, DreamScene, which was part of Windows Vista but disappeared in Windows 7, where slideshows were introduced instead of video wallpapers.

Currently, to enable video wallpapers in Windows 11 betas, users need to enable the feature with the ID 57645315 and restart the explorer.exe process. It is not yet clear whether this feature will be included in the stable update of the operating system and when this might happen.

Recall that in addition to video wallpapers, Microsoft is also testing another innovation in Windows 11 — a "Share with Copilot" button when hovering over any open window.
