On October 14, 2025, Microsoft officially ends support for Windows 10, released in 2015.

The end of support for Windows 10 was announced a long time ago, and Microsoft tried in every way to force users to upgrade to Windows 11, even showing them full-screen ads offering to buy a new computer.

The popularity of Windows 10 is explained by the fact that there are still millions of computers in the world that do not meet the requirements of Windows 11. In addition, many users do not want to update the system for various reasons.

According to StatCounter, it was only in July 2025 that Windows 11 overtook Windows 10 in popularity. However, in August, Windows 10 regained its position a little. Even more interestingly, in August and September, the popularity of Windows 7, which is almost 16 years old, unexpectedly increased.

Microsoft is likely aware that Windows 10 is still very popular, and is taking into account the position of consumer protection organizations. Therefore, the company will allow users who do not want to upgrade to Windows 11 to receive another year of free security updates, but this option is currently only available in the European Economic Area.

Other important updates, such as NVIDIA's Game Ready drivers, will also be released for another year — until October 2026. At the same time, Microsoft is less generous and will stop updating with new features for Microsoft 365 (Office) applications in August of next year.

In addition, the State Service of Special Communications of Ukraine has issued a warning about possible cyber risks for Windows 10 users. The agency advises upgrading to Windows 11 or purchasing paid security updates (Extended Security Updates, ESU), which can even be paid for with Microsoft Rewards points.
