Liam Fedus, OpenAI's vice president of post-training research, has decided to leave the company to found his own startup that will use artificial intelligence in materials science, The Information reports.

Fedus confirmed this information in a post on X, noting that he intends to apply AI to the field of physics, which he studied at university. He also added that OpenAI, for which the development of science through artificial intelligence is a strategic direction on the path to artificial general intelligence (AGI), plans to invest in and collaborate with his new company.

Fedus' startup will compete with Google DeepMind, Microsoft and other companies developing AI in materials science. DeepMind previously introduced its Gnome system, which, according to them, has found crystals for creating new materials. Microsoft, for its part, recently presented two artificial intelligence tools - MatterGen and MatterSim - for discovering new materials.
