Instagram Threads, the Meta platform built to compete with Elon Musk’s X, has grown to more than 350 million monthly active users, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told TechCrunch. That’s 30 million more than the previous quarter, when Threads had 320 million users.
This data shows an accelerating growth rate: Threads attracted 30 million new users in the first quarter, while in the fourth quarter of 2024 it attracted 20 million. Notably, in just one quarter, Threads attracted almost as many users as one of its newer competitors, the decentralized social platform Bluesky, which now has about 35 million users.
At the time, X had over 600 million monthly active users, as CEO Linda Iaccarino recently announced.
While Threads is still smaller than the other Meta platforms — Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp — it is growing rapidly and solidifying its position among microblogging services. In total, more than 3.4 billion people use at least one Meta app every day.
In the report, Zuckerberg said that this growth confirms that Threads "continues to be on track to become our next major social app."
