The Nintendo Switch 2 has become the fastest-selling console in the company's history. According to data from Circana and Sensor Tower, 2 million units were sold in the US between its launch in June and the end of July, which is 75% more than the initial sales of the original Switch, TechSpot reports.
Console was the sole driver of hardware spending growth in July 2025, with total industry spending reaching $384 million, up 21% from July 2024 and the highest for a July since 2008.
Other consoles in the US saw significant declines: PlayStation 5 sales fell 47%, the original Switch 52%, and the Xbox Series 69%. The Switch 2 maintained its top spot in sales for both July and the year.
Globally, the Switch 2 broke sales records back in June, with the company selling 5.82 million units in its first month. This is more than double the result of the original Switch, which sold 2.7 million units in its first month in 2017.
The most popular game on Switch 2 was Mario Kart World. Among physical releases in July, Donkey Kong Bananza was the leader, with EA Sports College Football 26 and EA Sports MVP Bundle 2025 taking third place overall. Other successful releases in July included Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 and Grounded 2. At the same time, Elden Ring: Nightreign fell sharply from first place in June to 16th.
Spending on games and content increased slightly compared to July 2024, while spending on accessories fell 8%. Overall, non-hardware categories showed a slight decline in sales for the year. The most popular games of 2025 remain Monster Hunter Wilds, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and College Football 26.
