Alexis Ohanian, an American entrepreneur, investor, and co-founder of Reddit, has joined Project Liberty and The People's Bid for TikTok, an initiative that aims to acquire TikTok and improve it for American users, the organization said in a press release.
As part of this initiative, a group of investors led by billionaire Frank McCourt has proposed buying TikTok’s US assets in order to move the social network to a decentralized platform based on the Frequency blockchain. The move is designed to give Americans full control over their data and protect their privacy.
Ohanian joined The People's Bid for TikTok and Project Liberty as a strategic advisor. He is the co-founder and former CEO of Reddit, and the founder of Seven Seven Six, a venture capital firm that "focuses on investing in companies shaping the future."
Project Liberty announced its desire to buy TikTok from the Chinese company ByteDance back in May 2024. The organization officially made its offer in January 2025, on the eve of the Supreme Court's decision to block the social network in the United States, which Donald Trump postponed for 75 days.
