OpenAI recently launched its AI-powered video-making app Sora, and it’s already set a record for fastest growth. Less than five days after its release, the app surpassed 1 million downloads. According to Sora CEO Bill Peebles, the growth rate has even outpaced ChatGPT’s initial success, despite the fact that the service is invite-only.
Sora was released on September 30, 2025 on iOS and is currently only available in the US and Canada. In the app, users can watch a feed of videos generated by the Sora 2 model, create their own videos, and use the "cameo" feature, which allows you to integrate yourself or friends into the video.
However, with its popularity came problems. Some users began creating videos featuring copyrighted characters in inappropriate situations, which drew criticism. In response, OpenAI gave rights holders more control and introduced settings that allow them to control how users' appearances are used.
According to Peebles, the team is actively working on Sora, promising new features and a fix for excessive moderation. Meanwhile, the app has already topped the App Store rankings.
