Qualcomm officially announced the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 mobile processor before the Snapdragon Summit. The company says that including the Snapdragon 8 Elite, this is the fifth generation, which is why Gen 5 is in the name despite the absence of Gen 4.
The company explains the Elite in the name by saying that it is an elite processor that is the "top of the premium Snapdragon 8 series." Like its predecessor, the new chip will be built on the Oryon architecture, which will provide flexibility and optimization for high speed and efficiency.
"Our next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite leads the charge, but it’s part of a broader roadmap. You’ll see some upcoming mobile platforms adopt Gen 5 as well. Our naming helps consumers and OEMs alike understand where each product fits and when it makes its debut," the statement said.
The full presentation of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 will take place during the Snapdragon Summit in late September. Then the company will reveal the official technical specifications of the processor.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is rumored to use custom Oryon cores with a main core clocked at 4.6GHz. The For Galaxy or Extreme Edition version will reach up to 4.7GHz. Among other possible features, the 8 Elite Gen 5 will have a new GPU clocked at 1.2GHz. The chip will be manufactured using TSMC's 3nm N3p process.
