Warner Bros. Discovery recently closed down Monolith Productions and canceled its Wonder Woman project. In this game, the developers planned to use their unique Nemesis system, which gave NPCs personality. However, after the studio's closure, the patent will remain with Warner Bros., so it is unlikely that we should expect new games with this mechanic. This is what Eurogamer writes.

The Nemesis system first appeared in the game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor in 2014. This unique mechanic gave enemies the memory of previous encounters with the player, which affected their behavior and strength. If an orc was defeated, he could become angry and seek revenge, and if he won, he could become arrogant. In addition, orcs in the game had their own hierarchy, moving up the career ladder and changing their roles depending on the development of events.

This mechanic was a strong point of both games, and Monolith planned to use it in Wonder Woman. Back in 2016, the decision to patent Nemesis drew a lot of criticism, but now, after the studio closed, it will simply lie unused, which causes even more outrage.

In the nine years since the patent was filed, the Nemesis system has only appeared in one game, Middle-earth: Shadow of War. It was released in 2017 and was already in development when Warner Bros. filed for the patent.
