The electric car market in Europe is experiencing explosive growth. In the first eight months of 2025, sales of new electric cars increased by 26%, and in August their share reached a record 20% of all new cars. This means that electric cars are rapidly entering the mass segment, writes AranaEV.

However, amid the general upswing, one of the key players in the industry is losing ground. Tesla, which has long been the undisputed leader, has seen a sharp drop in sales. Although the Model Y remains the best-selling electric car in Europe (83,000 cars since the beginning of the year), its sales have decreased by 34% compared to last year. The Model 3, which took third place with more than 50,000 sales, has also lost almost 30%.

In a market where most competitors are showing growth, Tesla became the only major brand in the TOP-10 with negative dynamics. In August, the company sold 14.2 thousand electric cars - 23% less than last year, although better than in July, when Tesla fell to seventh place.

The leader of the month was Volkswagen Group, which sold 16.1 thousand electric cars, which is 45% more than a year earlier. The concern's success is explained by a wide range: from the compact ID.3 to the ID.4 crossover and the new ID.7 sedan. This strategy provides buyers with more choice and displaces Tesla, which relies on only two models.

BMW rounded out the top three with 12,500 sales (+7%). Ford also strengthened its position with the new electric Explorer, pushing Kia out of the TOP 10.

Analysts say Tesla's problem is not a lack of demand for electric cars in general, but rather a narrow model range. At the same time, Volkswagen's success and the growth of sales of other "traditional" manufacturers show that consumers prefer variety.

Despite the problems of the American brand, the overall trend for the market is extremely positive. Achieving a 20% market share already brings the EU closer to meeting strict environmental standards planned for 2025-2027.
