Startup Perplexity has announced that its AI browser Comet is now available to anyone without a subscription. Previously, the product was only available to users of the most expensive Perplexity Max plan for $200 per month, later — some Pro subscribers and a limited number of invited guests. Now the company promises that Comet will remain free forever, and positions it as a competitor to Google Chrome.

Comet is different in that it integrates artificial intelligence into the very core of the browser. It combines Perplexity's search tools with a personal assistant that, according to the company, "travels the web with you" rather than just being added on top of the classic browser. This should make online shopping or everyday tasks easier.

In parallel, Perplexity launched Comet Plus, a subscription service with access to news collections from partners including CNN, Conde Nast, Fortune, Le Figaro, Le Monde, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post. It is included in the package for Pro and Max users, and costs $5 per month for others.

Comet was launched in July 2025, but the browser remained a niche product for a limited audience. Now the company is betting on mass adoption, emphasizing that "the internet is better with Comet."

By the way, Perplexity is not the only one trying to reinvent the browser with AI. Google is integrating Gemini into Chrome, The Browser Company is developing Dia, and Opera recently introduced Neon, its own AI browser.
