Paramount Pictures has begun negotiations with Activision Blizzard to acquire the rights to adapt the Call of Duty video game series into a film, Hollywood journalist and insider Matt Belloni reported.
According to him, the project is one of the priorities of the new head of the film studio, David Ellison, who is seeking to expand the portfolio of game adaptations after the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog films.
Call of Duty is one of the most profitable franchises in the video game world, with new releases every year. The next installment, Black Ops 7 from Treyarch and Raven Studios, is scheduled for November 2025. Despite Activision Blizzard's attempt to launch its own film studio in 2015, the first Call of Duty film never materialized, and subsequent plans for its production were shelved.
After merging with Microsoft, the company has gradually intensified work on film adaptations of its games: the Halo series has been completed, the Gears of War film is in preparation, as well as a series based on the game Grounded. At the same time, projects for Overwatch and Diablo were not implemented due to the cancellation of the deal with Netflix.
If the information is confirmed, it will be interesting to see what timeline the writers will choose for the upcoming Call of Duty movie, as the game series has covered various historical and fictional conflicts over its 21-year existence, from World War II to futuristic scenarios, including space battles.
