OpenAI plans to introduce verification for access to new AI models

OpenAI may soon require organizations to undergo mandatory verification to access some of its future artificial intelligence models through its API. The company's official website has revealed information about a new procedure called Verified Organization. This is reported by TechCrunch.

This innovation requires organizations to verify their identity using an official document issued by a government agency in one of the countries supported by OpenAI. One document can only be used to verify one organization, and only once every 90 days. Also, not all organizations will be able to go through this process — OpenAI notes that some applications may be rejected.

The company says the reason for introducing verification is to strengthen security and combat misuse or malicious use of its tools. The company explains that a small number of developers knowingly violate API usage policies, and the new system should help prevent such cases without limiting honest users' access to the latest technologies.

In addition to security, the new approach could also be aimed at protecting the company's intellectual property. OpenAI was previously reported to be investigating a possible data leak via an API, which is suspected to have been carried out by a group linked to the Chinese lab DeepSeek. The leak was likely used to train third-party models, which violates OpenAI's policies.

In response to such threats, the company has already blocked access to its services in China in the summer of 2024. The new verification rules may be another step towards strengthening control over the use of its AI solutions.
