Earlier, information appeared that the premiere of the film Mortal Kombat 2, based on the fighting game series of the same name, was postponed from October of this year to May of next year.

Despite the sequel's delay, it has been reported that New Line Cinema has already begun preparations for the third installment in the franchise. Accordingto Deadline, the company plans to bring back screenwriter and executive producer Jeremy Slater to write the sequel.

Sources say that Warner Bros., which owns the entire MK franchise, highly values the potential of a sequel. Slater himself, during a speech at New York Comic Con, noted that the studio was "very pleased" with the result of the second film and that he will begin work on a sequel.

The film's first trailer, released in July of this year, was a huge success, garnering 107 million views worldwide in its first day, setting a new record for an R-rated trailer. It is said that this event solidified the studio's desire to make a third Mortal Kombat film.

The plot of the third installment and its possible release date have not yet been revealed. However, during the release of the first film, producer Greg Russo suggested that the third film could focus on the events after the tournament. This approach echoes the game Mortal Kombat 3 (1995), where Shao Kahn invaded Earthrealm after losing the tournament in the second game.

Following the success of the Mortal Kombat reboot in 2021, Warner Bros. was reportedly considering expanding the franchise. Now, it looks like those plans are slowly coming to fruition.

Recall that the premiere of Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled for May 15, 2026.
