Microsoft is bringing key Windows development teams under one roof as part of a reorganization. Windows head Pawan Davuluri shared the news of the changes in an internal letter to employees, The Verge reports.

"This change unifies Windows engineering work under a single organization. Moving the teams working on Windows client and server together into one organization brings focus to delivering against our priorities," Davuluri wrote.

The Windows development team split in 2018 when then-CEO Terry Myerson left Microsoft. The result was two separate teams, with the core platform moving to Azure and the client team moving to a new Experiences & Devices division.

Despite further changes, the bulk of the engineers were still separated from the employees developing software, including Windows 11. However, with the new reorganization, this is changing and the entire team will work together for the first time in seven years under the leadership of Pawan Davuluri, who was recently promoted to the position of president of Windows and devices.

The leaders of the Core OS, Data Intelligence and Fundamentals, Security, and Engineering Systems teams will now report directly to Davuluri. Now, most of the engineering work for Windows will be led by one person, rather than across different Azure teams.

Some low-level parts of Windows will continue to be supported by Microsoft Azure teams, but the core of the operating system will be developed under a single leader.

"There are clear areas where we know we will continue to work with and support the Azure organization, such as data storage, networking, and security," Davuluri said. "Likewise, we will continue to have dependencies from the core kernel and virtualization and Linux teams, now part of Azure Core, to provide the foundational support for client scenarios, silicon enablement, and WSL."
