Microsoft has released an out-of-band update to fix a critical bug that caused system reset and recovery functions to fail after installing the August 2025 Windows security updates, BleepingComputer reports.

The issue affected devices running Windows 10 and older versions of Windows 11. Users encountered errors when attempting to reset the system with the option to keep files or when using the "Fix problems with Windows Update" tool. IT professionals also encountered failures when remotely resetting devices via RemoteWipe CSP.

Which updates caused the problem:

KB5063875 - Windows 11 23H2 and 22H2

KB5063709 — Windows 10 22H2, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021

KB5063877 — Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019

What fixes have been released:

KB5066189 — Windows 11, versions 23H2 and 22H2

KB5066188 — Windows 10 22H2, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021

KB5066187 — Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019

These updates completely replace the previous ones for the mentioned versions. The company emphasized that if users have not yet installed the August security updates, it is worth giving preference to the new patches. If the device is not affected by the problem, it is not necessary to install them.

Updates are available as additional updates through Windows Update and Windows Update for Business or for manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
