A California user has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft over the end of support for Windows 10, which officially ends on October 14, 2025. The plaintiff claims that the company is effectively forcing hundreds of millions of users to upgrade their hardware or switch to new devices with Windows 11, which has strict hardware requirements. This is reported by Android Headlines.
It is estimated that around 400 million devices do not meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11, including TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Microsoft recommends that users upgrade their hardware or upgrade to Copilot+PC with additional AI features.
The lawsuit also alleges that Microsoft is attempting to monopolize the generative AI market. The plaintiff argues that the end of Windows 10 support increases security risks, especially for users who cannot afford to upgrade to the new OS. The document states that two of the plaintiff's devices are working properly, but will become vulnerable after support ends.
Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program that allows you to continue receiving critical updates for another year with Microsoft Rewards or for a one-time fee of about $30. However, the plaintiff demands that Windows 10 support continue free for all users until the OS's market share drops below 10%.
Recall that Windows 11's share only recently reached 50.88% — 4 years after its release. The share of Windows 10 users currently amounts to 46.2% of all users of Microsoft operating systems.
