Windows 11 users have started receiving the annual new version of the system, which this year has the 25H2 index. The Verge reports.

The update is available through Windows Update and is rolling out gradually. It was previously tested by Windows Insiders in the Release Preview channel.

The 25H2 package is installing quickly because Microsoft is releasing it as a small “support package.” It is based on the same code base as the previous 24H2 version. This allows the company to maintain a single servicing branch and release new features for both versions at the same time.

The new release focuses on security, adding improved mechanisms for detecting vulnerabilities during compilation and execution, as well as AI-powered tools for secure coding. According to Microsoft, these changes meet the requirements of the Reliable Security Development Cycle policy.

The update has also become more compact by removing deprecated PowerShell 2.0 components and the WMIC command-line interface.

To get version 25H2 as soon as possible, you should enable the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" option in Windows Update. If the system detects incompatibilities with drivers or applications, the update may be temporarily delayed until the issues are resolved.

Microsoft plans to expand the availability of the package over the coming months and publish information about known issues on the Windows Release Health portal.
