Microsoft quietly announced that it will stop adding new features to Microsoft 365 (Office) applications for Windows 10 users in August 2026. While security updates will remain available until October 2028, functional innovations will gradually cease starting next year, writes The Verge.
For Microsoft 365 Personal and Family users, new Office features on Windows 10 will stop arriving in August 2026, at the same time as support for business users using the so-called Current Channel ends. Then, on October 13, 2026, new features will stop arriving for Monthly Enterprise Channel users, and on January 12, 2027, for Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel users.
Earlier this year, Microsoft had already abandoned its previous plan to completely stop security updates for Office on Windows 10, agreeing to continue them until 2028. However, the company did not announce at the time that from 2026, new Office features would only be available on Windows 11.
This is another step by Microsoft towards the end of support for Windows 10, which will officially end on October 14, 2025. After that, Office updates will remain in the form of security patches only - without new functionality.
While Microsoft is actively encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 11, millions of devices around the world are still running Windows 10. Even though Windows 11 recently surpassed the top 10 in usage share for the first time, the transition is slow. For home users, Microsoft has offered the option to continue receiving security updates for free for another year if they activate the Windows Backup feature.
