Square Enix's latest financial report revealed that Life is Strange: Double Exposure was a "major loss" for the company. This means that a sequel is unlikely to be forthcoming, TheGamer reports.
Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu stated during the financial report that Life is Strange: Double Exposure caused significant financial losses to the company, which were offset by the Dragon Quest 3 remaster. The term "big loss" has also been used to describe other unsuccessful projects, such as Guardians of the Galaxy and some parts of the Tomb Raider series.
The return of Max Caulfield, the main character of the original Life is Strange, made it seem like the new game would be a real sensation among fans of the series. Of course, there were questions about how the writers would cope with the huge choice that the first game offered, but the return of the character who started it all seemed like a win-win move.
However, Double Exposure received mixed reviews from critics and was heavily criticized by fans of the series. Many disliked the way the game presented Max and Chloe's relationship, as well as the overall tone and canon of the series. The Verge criticized the game for its simplistic mechanics, weak plot, and the fact that the sequel was not essential to the main story.
During the end credits of Life is Strange: Double Exposure, it was stated that "Max Caulfield will return," but that now seems much less likely.
