It's been five years since Apple ditched Intel processors in favor of its own chips. Now, according to Bloomberg, Intel is seeking investment and is in talks with Apple about a possible collaboration. The talks are in the early stages and do not guarantee a deal.
Intel is going through a difficult period: the company has laid off 15% of its workforce and canceled plans to build factories in Europe. In August, the US government bought a 10% stake to accelerate the launch of production in Ohio. After that, NVIDIA invested $ 5 billion in chips for PCs and data centers, and SoftBank invested another $ 2 billion. Intel is also trying to attract other companies to partner.
Apple has long used Intel processors in its Macs, but since 2020 it has switched to its own Apple Silicon, manufactured by TSMC. An attempt to collaborate with Intel on 5G modems also failed. The company was unable to create a quality product and eventually sold the business to Apple.
Experts do not expect Apple to return to Intel processors. More likely, if there is a deal, it will concern the production of individual components for Apple, while key chips will continue to be manufactured by TSMC.
