Google has introduced an update for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 that improves their performance in noisy environments and adds new interaction options with the Gemini Live voice assistant, 9to5Google reports.
The main innovation is Adaptive Audio, a new option in the Active Noise Control settings. It will adjust the volume level according to the user's surroundings and allow them to hear the world even while listening to music.
With Adaptive Audio enabled, the headphones will also automatically enable Loud Noise Protection to protect against loud sounds around you. However, Google warns that this feature won't protect against unexpected loud sounds, like explosions or gunshots.
The update also improves the Gemini Live experience, making it easier to communicate in noisy environments with music or human voices. This is possible thanks to a new audio processing system that prioritizes the user's voice and reduces noise, but only when the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are connected to a Pixel 8 or later Google smartphone.
Users will also be able to set up the ability to answer calls and send texts with a nod of the head. This feature can be enabled in the Pixel Buds app.
Head gestures on the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are powered by accelerometers and other "specialized sensors." When on a call, users will be able to nod their head to answer or shake it to reject. For incoming text messages, a head nod will trigger a reply that users can dictate. The gestures will be available in the coming weeks.
