Google CEO confirms company will merge Android and ChromeOS
In June 2024, Google began using the Android Linux kernel and Android frameworks to develop ChromeOS, and now one of the company's executives says that in the future the two operating systems will be combined. This is reported by The Verge.
Samir Samat, president of the Android ecosystem, told TechRadar that Google is going to "merge ChromeOS and Android into a single platform." He also noted that he is now interested in how and why people use their laptops now.
Changes introduced to ChromeOS in June 2024 were aimed at accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence features, simplifying engineering efforts, and attempting to improve the collaboration of various devices, including smartphones, with Chromebooks.
A little later, in November 2024, reports emerged that Google was porting ChromeOS to Android to better compete with iPads, which for some users have already completely replaced laptops.
Reports of the merger of the two operating systems are not new and first appeared back in 2015, but now this is the first time that one of Google's executives has officially announced it. However, apart from the company's intentions, Samat did not share any more details, so when exactly we will see the new merged OS is currently unclear.
