Google has introduced a new Guided Learning tool in its Gemini chatbot, designed for step-by-step learning. The feature competes with OpenAI’s recently released ChatGPT Study mode, Fast Company reports.
Unlike traditional chatbots that provide instant answers, Guided Learning breaks down complex answers into intermediate steps for deeper understanding of the material. Instead of direct answers, the system guides users to understanding through a series of thoughtful questions. The tool is the AI industry’s response to concerns that chatbots could undermine education by providing quick answers without the learning process.
Students can ask questions to the AI at any time. In response, Guided Learning typically provides contextual clues that encourage students to find the answer on their own, often rephrasing the question rather than solving it right away. If a student wanders off topic, the AI acknowledges their interest but gently brings them back to the main material.
While most of Guided Learning’s responses are text-based, some queries generate illustrations and suggest relevant YouTube videos from educational experts. Students can upload course notes or syllabi, allowing the tool to tailor the interaction to the material being studied.
The launch of Guided Learning is part of Google’s $1 billion, three-year AI education initiative. College students ages 18 and older in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil will receive free 12-month access to the Google AI Pro plan.
The Google AI for Education Accelerator program will provide free AI training, Google Career Certificates, and advanced AI tools to college students across the country. More than 100 universities, representing millions of students, have already signed up for the program.
