The European Commission has rejected claims by US President Donald Trump that EU digital services rules unfairly target US technology companies, stressing that they do not constitute a form of censorship, Reuters reports.

Recently, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to impose additional tariffs on all countries that implement digital taxes, laws or regulations, and that "all of them are aimed at harming or discriminating against American technology." He is also considering imposing sanctions on European officials involved in the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act (DSA).

The European Commission stressed that the DMA and DSA apply to all platforms operating in the EU, regardless of their country of origin, and regulate economic activity within the bloc. The Commission representative recalled that the last three DSA decisions were applied to Chinese companies AliExpress, Temu and TikTok.

The EU also denied claims of censorship. The DSA does not oblige platforms to remove content, but only requires compliance with its own rules and conditions. According to a Commission representative, more than 99% of decisions on content moderation in the EU are made by the platforms themselves.

The Commission representative added that EU laws are aimed at protecting users and a safe environment on the Internet, including combating illegal and harmful content, and not at discriminating against specific companies.
