The European Commission is not going to impose large fines for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA) on Apple and Meta, Reuters reports, citing anonymous sources.

The EU antitrust authority is focused on making sure companies comply with the law, rather than imposing sanctions, the sources said. The European Commission also took into account that the violations were not long-term.

US President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on countries that impose fines on US companies in a memo last month. EU officials responded by saying they remain impartial in their investigations.

Sources said that a final decision on the amount of the fines has not yet been made and the situation could still change. A decision is expected by the end of March.

In a compliance report last week, Meta noted that despite its efforts to comply with EU law, regulators continue to impose requirements that exceed the limits set by law.

In a DMA compliance report published on March 7, Apple said the changes introduced create additional risks for users and developers, such as increased threats from malware, fraud, and scams.
