Eric Schmidt, who was CEO of Google from 2001 to 2011, has become CEO of space startup Relativity Space. In his new role, he will lead the development of a reusable launch vehicle, TechCrunch reports.

Relativity Space is known for manufacturing its rockets using unusual technologies, including the use of 3D printers, automated robots, and artificial intelligence.

Schmidt joins Relativity Space as the company prepares to launch its largest rocket, the Terran R, in 2026, which will rival SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy. Relativity Space has signed nearly $3 billion in launch contracts with customers ahead of the first Terran R launch.

Schmidt will succeed co-founder Tim Ellis as CEO. Ellis said he will continue to support Relativity Space on the company's board of directors.
