Elon Musk's The Boring Company, along with the governor of Tennessee, announced plans to build a 10-mile underground transportation line in Nashville. It will connect the city's downtown and convention center with the international airport, TechCrunch reports.
The project will be financed by the company itself and its private partners. In the near future, local authorities and The Boring Company are to begin public consultations, route assessment and planning for the first phase of construction. According to forecasts, the first section could open as early as autumn 2026.
If successful, Nashville will become the second city to have a similar system, following Las Vegas, where 3 million passengers have already used the tunnel.
The Boring Company was founded in 2017 after Musk complained about traffic congestion on Twitter. The company originally planned to build a network of hyperloop tunnels, but many projects in Los Angeles, Chicago and other cities have been canceled or frozen.
The current concept is more of an alternative to public transportation, which state officials say could be less costly and take some of the strain off city infrastructure.
