According to Appfigures, an app analytics company, in March ChatGPT became the most downloaded app in the world, surpassing Instagram and TikTok, which traditionally held the top spots in the global rankings.
According to Appfigures (via TechCrunch), ChatGPT downloads grew 28% compared to February, reaching 46 million new installs. This was ChatGPT’s biggest monthly growth ever.
One factor in its popularity was the app’s feature updates, including improved image generation, which allowed users to create memes and Studio Ghibli-style illustrations. OpenAI also updated ChatGPT’s voice feature and removed some content moderation restrictions. The app’s popularity also grew due to its brand recognition: ChatGPT became associated with the concept of artificial intelligence, similar to how Google was associated with search in the 2000s.
Also in March, the top five download leaders included social apps Facebook and WhatsApp, and others, such as Temu, CapCut, Telegram, Snapchat, and Threads, made it into the top ten.
In total, the top 10 apps were downloaded 339 million times in March, up from 299 million in February.
