ChatGPT has received a memory function for users without a subscription
OpenAI has started rolling out a simplified version of the memory feature to the free ChatGPT. Now the bot can consider not only saved data, but also recent conversations to provide more personalized responses.
Previously, this feature was only available to paid users. It appeared back in April 2024. Now OpenAI is making it available to a wider audience, while maintaining the key benefits — preserving the user’s preferences, communication style, and favorite topics.
The memory feature is activated gradually. When it becomes available, the user will receive a notification in the interface. A corresponding section appears in the ChatGPT settings, where you can view, edit, or disable the saved information.
The memory feature is part of OpenAI’s overall focus on improving personalization in ChatGPT. Combined with custom instructions, it makes interactions with the bot more convenient and contextual.
OpenAI also emphasizes that users can control what the chatbot remembers. It can be temporarily disabled or completely cleared — both individual entries and the entire history.
