Carbon Robotics and NVIDIA have teamed up to tackle one of the most challenging challenges in agriculture — weed control. The result is the LaserWeeder G2, a 20-foot machine powered by AI and two dozen NVIDIA GPUs, TechSpot reports.
It uses computing power combined with 36 high-resolution cameras to detect weeds, which are killed on contact by 24 240-watt diode lasers.
The LaserWeeder G2, capable of identifying and killing up to 10,000 weeds per minute, or 600,000 per hour, and best of all, it doesn't use harmful chemicals. According to the manufacturer, customers can expect to cover 1.5 to 3 acres per hour. The company says its machine can outperform a 75-person manual crew with millimeter accuracy and, when used properly, will kill 99 percent of weeds.
The LaserWeeder G2 is equipped with 12 modules, each of which uses two NVIDIA GPUs for advanced image processing. The machine currently weighs 3,260 kilograms and has a power of at least 145 horsepower. Carbon Robotics says that its devices have already destroyed more than 30 billion weeds.
