EA executives want Battlefield 6 to reach 100 million players

- 3 July, 02:00 PM

Despite the fact that Battlefield 6 received quite good feedback from players after closed testing, the internal situation is somewhat worse and the interaction between several studios is not as good as we would like. But this does not prevent Electronic Arts executives from setting unrealistic expectations, such as reaching the mark of 100 million players. This is what PCGamer writes.

EA's approach to the new Battlefield, with multiple studios working on the game at once, seemed a bit contradictory and caused more chaos than harmony. Moreover, the budget of the new shooter has already exceeded the $400 million mark, while the game does not even have a finished campaign yet, even considering that it will be quite short.

One of EA's internal studios, Ridgeline Games, was solely working on the campaign for Battlefield 6. The team spent over 2 years developing it, but it didn't work out and it was shut down in February 2024, which is why there are now problems with the single-player story.

But even the fact that the campaign lags behind all other game modes hasn't stopped EA executives from setting incredibly high expectations. According to several company employees, management expects Battlefield 6 to attract 100 million players over time. That's a very ambitious number for a game in a series that has typically lagged behind Call of Duty in popularity, and even at its best, has managed to pull in just over 30 million.

Executives hope that the free-to-play battle royale mode, which will be the "core offering" for Battlefield 6, will help attract new players who might not otherwise have paid attention to the game. However, the developers themselves, including those at the main studio DICE, largely do not believe that achieving such a goal is realistic.

Recall that it was previously reported that Battlefield 6 would be fully announced in the summer, with the game releasing before the release of GTA VI, that is, by March 2026. It is currently unclear how much these plans will be affected by problems with the development of the campaign and the implementation of some other features.
