Two vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from Xpeng Aeroht, Xpeng's flying car division, collided and crashed during an air show in Changchun. It is not yet known which models were affected, CnEVPost reports, citing local media.
At least one passenger was injured in the accident and taken to hospital. According to eyewitnesses, his injuries are not life-threatening.
A representative of Xpeng Aeroht told CnEVPost that the accident occurred after a rehearsal for the Changchun air show. Industry insiders said the incident demonstrates the complexity of low-altitude flying and highlights the need for strict safety measures.
The company said two aircraft collided during a double formation rehearsal due to insufficient spacing between them. One of the aircraft landed safely, while the other suffered structural damage and caught fire upon landing.
Apart from one injured passenger, no other injuries were reported. Personnel at the scene were safe, and local authorities have already completed rescue operations. The causes of the collision are currently under investigation.
In addition to eVTOL, Xpeng Aeroht is also developing modular cars that can both fly and drive. Earlier this year, the Chinese company said it plans to mass produce them in 2026.
